A Brief History of TOOLOX® 33

TOOLOX® 33 is part of SSAB’s modern family of quenched‑and‑tempered tool and engineering steels. The alloy concept behind Toolox was developed from SSAB’s low‑carbon Hardox® and Weldox® steels—well‑known for their toughness, dimensional stability, and machinability. The intent was to create a ready‑to‑use, pre‑hardened steel that would eliminate the need for stress‑relieving or additional heat treatment while offering excellent surface finish capabilities.

How TOOLOX® 33 was Developed

TOOLOX® 33 was engineered to have a low carbon content and high cleanliness, resulting in very good machinability and high fatigue resistance. Additionally, this alloy is delivered quenched and tempered, meaning components can be machined to final shape without additional heat treatment. The steel was developed to remain highly stable during machining, even in large sections, addressing common problems found in P20‑type mold steels. These combined features positioned Toolox® 33 as a steel optimized for tooling, molding, and engineering components that benefit from precision machining and stable performance.

Early Applications of TOOLOX® 33

Early uses focused on industries that needed clean, dimensionally stable tool steel. Some applications included plastic injection molds, rubber molds, and precision tooling. These initial applications established TOOLOX® 33 as a superior alternative to common P20-type steels.

How TOOLOX® 33 is Used Today

Today, TOOLOX® 33 is widely adopted across multiple industries for both toolmaking and general engineering applications. Modern applications include plastic and rubber molds, machine components, bending tools, wear plates, slide guides, and high-surface-quality applications.
